Ice Fishing with "Big" Tim Sullivan

On Saturday afternoon I was invited by one of my law school buddies, "Big" Tim Sullivan (the guy with his arm around me), to go ice fishing with him and another friend. It was awesome. We drove 30 minutes north of our home to a huge lake. Then we drove out about a mile onto the lake. I'll tell you what, when you first drive out onto the lake, that is an interesting experience. It didn't matter that news reports said the ice thickness was 4 feet, I was a little freaked out. New respect for those ice-road truckers. The black tent-looking thing is an ice shack. There are nice ones that can cost thousands, but Tim got his for 50 bucks on Craig's List. The contraption with the white buoy tells us whether there are fish around. "Big" Tim drilled the holes with the auger and then we put the shack over the holes. Then you and your buddies open the bottom of the of the shack, sit on chairs, fire up the propane heater, drink beer and smoke cigars (Gatorade and chewing sunflower seeds for me), and pull fish out left and right. Then you release them back. Nothing big enough to eat, but they fight a lot and it's just fun being out there. Definitely a good time. If hockey is the official sport of Minnesota, ice-fishing is the past time.

I don't think I would have drove on the ice. That would freak me out!!! Can't believe they let you go out there in those orange camo pants. I don't think Sid would even admit he knew you in those pants!! You are the only guy I know that can pull those off!! No pun intended.

Brings back the old days of freezing our buns off and Hoskins stepping in the hole. Did you guys have a heater in the tent thing?

That sounds like a lot of fun. Luckily around here the river doesn't freeze, I am grateful for that, but ice fishing would be fun to experience.

Yes, we actually did have a heater in the shack. I think I put that in the paragraph.
